Illustrative scenario. This is not a documented client case or a reported result.
The chase variant sold immediately.
That did not mean the assortment worked.
Collectors may buy multiple units to find a rare version. Resellers may clear inventory at launch. Social posts may focus on the scarce item while the standard products accumulate elsewhere.
The buyer needs to evaluate the productivity of the complete assortment:
Base-item sell-through
Demand by character or design
Sales after the chase is found
Customer complaints and returns
Whether the mechanic attracts new fans or only arbitrage
Productivity per facing, not only launch-day traffic
The operating team needs to understand how the chase enters the case. If every master case contains a fixed ratio, the rare item may pull forward orders while leaving the retailer with slow base stock. If the placement is random, receiving, employee handling, and online fulfillment can complicate the consumer promise.
The brand should also decide whether the chase is a surprise, a disclosed ratio, or a separately numbered product. Each creates a different operational and customer-service burden.
A healthy chase program makes the core line more interesting. An unhealthy one uses scarcity to disguise that shoppers do not want the ordinary item at the ordinary price.
Measure the program after the first excitement. Review weeks of supply by base item, reorders after launch, resale behavior, damage, and the percentage of demand concentrated around the rare version.
The buyer should never have to accept a weak base assortment to gain access to one strong chase.
Measure the base line after the launch
For each case, record receipts, base-unit sales, chase-unit sales and remaining inventory. If an illustrative case contains one chase and eleven ordinary units, an early chase sellout says little about how fast those eleven sell. Track demand after opening week and decide replenishment from the whole case. Publish any rarity claims only when supported by the actual production and allocation rules.
Next step: Model the economics and weeks of supply for every item left behind after the chase variant sells.
