A product can be physically available and commercially invisible.
Bad item data can place it in the wrong category, remove it from important filters, prevent receiving, create replenishment errors, or make the page impossible to understand.
The buyer sees the shopper and assortment effects. If attributes are missing, the item may not appear when customers filter by use case, size, compatibility, color, or feature. If descriptions are inconsistent, the assortment becomes harder to shop.
The operating team sees the operating effects. Incorrect dimensions, weights, identifiers, case packs, or costs can create receiving failures, freight problems, deductions, and inventory mismatches.
Create one controlled source for:
Item number
UPC or GTIN
Unit, case, and pallet identifiers
Description
Dimensions and weight
Cost and retail
Pack configuration
Images and video
Claims and specifications
Compliance documents
Category and filter attributes
Assign an owner for retailer submission and another person to validate the live result.
Do not assume that successful transmission means correct publication.
Data quality is not administrative housekeeping. It determines whether the product can exist inside the retailer.
Keep a correction trail
Record the approved value, retailer-submitted value, live value, owner and last verification date for each critical field. When dimensions or pack quantities change, identify affected systems before resubmitting. Recheck receiving and the shopper page after acceptance so that a corrected source file does not leave old data in another system.
Next step: Audit the live item against the approved source file before measuring demand.
