The Golf Shop, REI and Dick's Are Not the Same Channel
A wholesale revenue target can conceal several different operating models. A small pro shop, an outdoor specialist and a national sporting-goods chain may buy the same non-food product for different shopper missions and require different support.
The useful comparison is the proposed account's written terms and operating workflow. Retailer names do not tell you the actual order size, replenishment policy or compliance obligations.
Build the account comparison before the sales target
Use an account worksheet with seven rows: shopper and use case; opening assortment; order size and case multiple; replenishment cadence; price and net contribution; education and launch support; operational requirements and owners.
In a fictional golf-accessory scenario, a pro shop tests a narrow seasonal assortment, an outdoor specialist evaluates a technical use case, and a national chain considers a multi-location test. These are teaching examples, not claims about any named retailer's buying practices.
The pro-shop proposal might emphasize manageable opening quantities and a reorder contact. The specialist proposal might require an approved compatibility guide. The chain proposal might require an inventory allocation plan and a documented shipment workflow. Confirm each requirement with the account rather than assuming it from the label.
Compare workload as well as orders
An attractive wholesale price can conceal costly customization, small shipments or manual account administration. Estimate contribution after account-specific costs, then identify the recurring hours required to serve the program. Keep fixed team cost separate from variable order cost.
Choose which model the current team can execute repeatedly. A small account with clear repeat orders can be a better first operating test than a large order with unfamiliar requirements. That is a capacity decision, not a universal preference for small retailers.
